Wooden Bridges

on Wednesday, 08 February 2012.

I have just returned from a walk about in Parnwell and I was delighted to see the first wooden bridge is now receiving its 'makeover' with great new non slip decking.  The bridge that is being done as I type is the small one that is very well used next to the Parnwell doctors and leading into the Park.  The contractors told me that the non slip decking is of a very high quality and the second bridge (behind Whittington) is scheduled to be done next week.

The concern regarding how slippery these bridges were was brought to the Parnwell Local Delivery Group only a few months ago and, working closely with Enterprise, they agreed that there was a problem and are replacing the surfaces.

A wonderful example of residents having a real say in what is needed in their own community and most importantly, being able to see a quick outcome.

Well done - and thank you to all concerned.

Speed Watch camera

on Wednesday, 09 November 2011.

Speed Watch camera now mounted in Saltersgate.  This is part of evidencing the need for some form of traffic calming measures.  We hope to get use of a second one soon and will be targetting other areas in Parnwell.  The issue of people driving at inappropriate speeds in areas of Parnwell was raised during the Planning for Real consultation by many residents and became a high priority of the Parnwell Local Delivery Group.  Working closely with the Council's Neighbourhood Officer for this area we have been able to secure the use of two cameras which actually count the number of vehicles which go over a 'set' speed.  The evidenced gained will help tremendously with this priority.

Update from Positively Parnwell Development Co-ordinator

on Tuesday, 03 May 2011.

I have now been in this post for 10 months and whilst writing reports recently I have been reflecting on the successes achieved by the project so I thought I would share some with you.

Firstly I have been really heartened that the Community House is so busy with such a lot of daily activity.  Not only are clubs, organisations and Partner agencies using the house regularly, but we now have residents calling in to the house to ask advice or to find out what’s going on.  I believe this is partly because of our new notice board which has been placed in the centre of Parnwell, but mostly because residents are seeing so much activity at the house.

Each Monday morning Ormiston Children & Families Trust hold a Stay and Play session at the Community House, this is very well attended and often to capacity.  Monday evenings the house becomes a ‘Chill out Zone’ for 7-12 year olds where volunteers run structured activities.  This group has grown very quickly and now 10 young people regularly attend.  Each Thursday morning a group of residents who wish to improve their English come along, have coffee and a chat.  These residents are supported by members of the Skills Exchange who organise speaking activities.  The sessions are well attended and everyone seems to get something from each activity.  The local PCSO and Housing Officer hold a monthly drop in at the house on the last Wednesday of each month and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau run bimonthly drop in sessions.

One of the priorities of my role was to organise Planning for Real activities in Parnwell and to set up a Local Delivery Group to create an action plan to ensure that the suggestions made by residents were acted upon. To date
• 545 suggestions have been made
• At 10 different sessions
• By 151 residents
• Between the ages of 7 – 75
• And 10 different ethnicity groups

The first meeting of the Parnwell Local Delivery Group has now taken place and this group will continue to meet and create an action plan for Parnwell.  This action plan will feed into Peterborough City Council’s Neighbourhood Council process.  If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Chill Out Zone

on Thursday, 10 March 2011.

I am happy to announce that the Chill out Zone Youth Club for children ages 7 -12 in Parnwell has reopened at the Parnwell Community House, 74 Whittington.  I am so pleased that volunteers have agreed to restart this club and these volunteers have come up with a programme of structured fun activities for the young people to get involved with. Young People who wish to take part should come along to the Community House on Mondays – 4.30pm – 6.00pm – there is a 20p charge to cover costs.
This club complements the detached youth work that Peterborough City Council’s Young Peoples Service is currently undertaking for 13 – 19 year old young people in Parnwell each Wednesday evening.
